Celebrating National Volunteers’ Week 2026
Telford & Wrekin Council is proud to once again celebrate National Volunteers’ Week (1 to 7 June 2026), recognising the incredible contributions volunteers make across the Borough not just during this dedicated week, but all year round.
While this week’s celebration shines a spotlight on volunteering, the impact of volunteers is felt every day, strengthening services, supporting residents and helping communities to grow and thrive throughout the year.
This annual celebration is an opportunity to thank the thousands of people who give their time, energy, skills and expertise to improve local life here in the Borough. From supporting local charities and caring for the environment, to mentoring young people and helping at community events, volunteers are the backbone of our vibrant and resilient community.
Across Telford and Wrekin, more than 3,300 Council volunteers play an essential role in supporting our communities. They contribute across a wide range of activities, from helping to deliver local services and events to supporting wellbeing, digital inclusion and the environment. Many more volunteers also give their time to charities, community groups and local organisations across the Borough, hidden heroes whose dedication makes an important difference to the lives of local people every day.
Councillor Lee Carter, Leader of Telford & Wrekin Council, said:
“It always fills me with pride to see just how many people across our Borough want to volunteer to help their communities. Their kindness, commitment and willingness to help others is truly heart-warming.
“As a Co-operative Council, I believe we achieve the best outcomes by working together with residents, communities and partners. We are proud to empower local people to play an active role in shaping the services and support that make a real difference in their neighbourhoods, and volunteers are central to that approach, playing a vital role in helping us deliver these ambitions every single day.”
“National Volunteers’ Week is a fantastic opportunity to recognise that contribution and say thank you to the thousands of people who selflessly give their time to support others across our Borough.
“They not only support essential services but also help create a strong sense of belonging and community pride. We are incredibly grateful for everything they do.”
Councillor Paul Davis, Cabinet Member for Strong Communities, Local Pride and Veterans said:
“Volunteering is one of the most powerful ways to build resilient and connected communities. It’s about sharing skills, supporting local ideas and helping communities to flourish.
“Just as importantly, volunteering brings real benefits to individuals, helping people to build confidence, develop new skills, meet new people and even improve their wellbeing.
“Telford & Wrekin Council is proud to work closely with a wide range of partner organisations to provide a diverse and inclusive offer of volunteering opportunities across the Borough, making sure volunteering is accessible to everyone who wants to make a difference.”
Councillor Kelly Middleton, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Unlocking Opportunities for All added:
“Whether you’re contributing your expertise to a project, helping to organise activities, or simply lending a hand in your neighbourhood, every action helps strengthen community connections and create opportunities for others.
“If you’ve ever thought about getting involved, now is the perfect time. There are so many ways to make a difference. Visit the Volunteer Telford website to explore the wide range of opportunities available.”
Telford and Wrekin Voluntary and Community Sector Alliance, a leading local organisation that, with the support of volunteers, works to connect and inspire people to improve lives in the Borough, said:
“National Volunteers’ Week is an important opportunity to recognise and celebrate the incredible contribution volunteers make across our Borough every single day.
“From community groups and charities to grassroots organisations, volunteers are at the heart of supporting local people, strengthening communities, and helping services reach those most in need.
“Telford and Wrekin Voluntary and Community Sector Alliance welcomes and thanks everyone involved in delivering this campaign and for recognising the vital role of volunteering across our communities.
“We are proud to work in partnership to champion the breadth, diversity, and impact of volunteering, and to celebrate the individuals who give their time, skills, and compassion to make a difference.”
Throughout the week, the Council will be sharing inspiring stories from local volunteers on its website and social media channels.
Volunteering is open to everyone and can be as flexible as needed and with opportunities spanning a wide range of activities and interests, there is something for everyone.
It’s a great way to meet new people, develop skills, gain experience and make a meaningful impact in your community.
