The Telford & Wrekin Council initiative has been running for the last three years and has seen hundreds of children sign up to take part.

It encourages children up to the age of 10 to have a go at ten fun and enriching activities to discover new talents, build their confidence and explore the world.

The ten activities are:

  1. Join in competitive sports
  2. Play an instrument
  3. Learn to swim
  4. Take part in drama and performing arts
  5. Visit the seaside and the countryside
  6. Experience museums, galleries, and heritage sites
  7. Take part in camping trips and overnight residential
  8. Learn to ride a bike
  9. Take part in debating
  10. Use a library

To spark the interest of children who have just started in reception, they’ve been given a 10 by 10 adventure card, where the children can tick off each activity they’ve tried.

Councillor Shirley Reynolds, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People, Education, Employment and Skills, said:

“By giving children simple, exciting challenges to complete before the age of ten, we’re encouraging a love of learning and adventure.

“The adventure cards give children the opportunity to track their progress themselves as they give each activity a go, which we hope helps them discover new experiences and build confidence through play and exploration.

“Parents or guardians can create an online account to track their progress too via our 10 by 10 website. And to anyone with younger children, I’d also encourage them to explore our 5 by 5 initiative, which helps younger children prepare for starting school and is the perfect stepping stone to 10 by 10.”

Jenny Gascoigne, Executive Headteacher at Wrockwardine Wood Infant School and Oakengates Nursery Federation, said:

“We are delighted to promote the 10 by 10 initiative and actively encourage all children to get involved. It’s a fantastic opportunity for children to be curious, try something new, and take part in a wide range of enriching experiences beyond the classroom.

“Through 10 by 10, children have fun, learn new skills, develop personally, and build the confidence and resilience they need, while making lasting memories along the way.”
