Council extends support to Wilko store employees
Despite tireless efforts on a national level to secure a buyer for the beloved retail chain, Wilko has been unable to secure one, leading to the closure of their Southwater store.
However, there is a glimmer of hope for the Wellington store, as Poundland owners have stepped in to support and save it, safeguarding jobs for the local community.
"It’s been a very distressing time for the staff of Wilko. While it’s a great relief to everyone that Poundland has taken ownership of the Wellington store the staff will still be going through an uncertain time so it’s essential we do all we can as a council to support them " stated Councillor Lee Carter (Lab) Cabinet Member for Place (The Economy & Neighbourhood Services.
"As a council we are committed to supporting our residents. We have been in regular contact with Wilko locally and are continuing to provide assistance and support to the dedicated staff affected by difficult situation," emphasised Councillor Eileen Callear (Lab), Cabinet Member for Education, Employment, and Visitor Economy.
The council's dedicated teams are in close contact with Wilko to ensure that their employees have access to a range of job support services, aimed at providing vital support during this challenging and uncertain time.
JobBox, the council's free job support service, is already working to offer tailored support to help Wilko employees transition into new opportunities successfully, facilitating connections with businesses seeking candidates with similar skill sets.
In response to the closure, Telford & Wrekin Council is heartened to see local businesses expressing their willingness to support Wilko employees by offering jobs and interviews. This display of solidarity is a testament to the resilience of our business community.
Local businesses are encouraged to contact the council's Job Box team should they have any opportunities for Wilko staff. The council will ensure that these opportunities are shared and matched with the relevant personnel.
Telford & Wrekin Council is dedicated to assisting the affected Wilko staff during this transitional period. They remain committed to the well-being and prosperity of our community and are confident that together, they can help the employees gain new roles within the borough.
