Crucial Crew returns to teach children the safety essentials
More than 2300 year six students have attended Crucial Crew this year, an event which educates Telford and Wrekin pupils in safety essentials and helps them make the step up to secondary school.
Telford & Wrekin Council have been running the multi-partnership event since 1994, and it has returned this year after taking a break during the covid pandemic.
For a fortnight, over 50 schools across Telford and Wrekin took part in the event at Telford College.
Pupils took part in several different scenarios throughout the day, learning about:
• road safety
• fire safety
• electrical safety
• being streetwise
• anti-social behaviour
• alcohol awareness
• water safety
• healthy eating
• being active
• being a good listener
Cllr Kelly Middleton (Lab), the cabinet member for healthy, safer & stronger communities and partnerships, said:
"Crucial Crew teaches pupils those crucial safety essentials that we as adults can take for granted, as well as vital guidance on what to do in many potentially unsafe situations.
"We have been running Crucial Crew for many years, and seeing it return after the pandemic is fantastic.
"Having spoken to the pupils at Crucial Crew, you can see how much they are enjoying it, but also that they were learning every step of the way.
"There are several Crucial Crew events in the country, and ours is one of the best attended. Nearly every school in the borough takes part.
"I would very much like to thank Telford College, who have been a great venue for an event of this size and nature.
"Finally, thanks to all our partners that have supported this year's event. Without them, it would not be the success it is year after year."
People taking part in Crucial Crew included: West Mercia Police with the police cadets, Telford & Wrekin Road Safety, School nurses from the Shropshire Community Trust, Telford & Wrekin Council’s Leisure Services, Royal Lifesaving Society, Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, National Grid, Telford & Wrekin Council’s Public Protection Team, Telford Stars, Recharge, and Access to sport AFC Telford.
