Councillors' Pride Fund helps break down barriers to learning
Telford & Wrekin Council is breaking down barriers to learning and employment by funding a series of community learning sessions for residents in Madeley and Sutton Hill.
The Councillors’ Pride Fund 2022 is delivering free taster courses and training sessions to help people learn new skills as well as monthly Job Box events to help jobseekers find work on their doorstep.
Madeley and Sutton Hill ward councillors Derek White and Janice Jones have allocated the funding to bring these sessions and events to fruition.
The council's Pride Fund allocates a proportion of funding to each borough councillor to spend in their ward to support local projects and causes.
As a result of the Madeley and Sutton Hill funding, free taster courses in Food Safety, Health and Safety and First Aid are now available to residents in those areas to help them learn new skills.
The funding will also help to deliver Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) training – the UK’s leading skills certification scheme within the UK construction industry.
Monthly Job Box drop in sessions will also be staged for the next six months in the Madeley and Sutton Hill communities and regular jobs fairs will highlight a range of exciting vacancies in the area.
Telford & Wrekin Council’s Job Box is a one stop shop for information and support on job vacancies, training and employment in Telford and Wrekin.
Councillor Derek White (Lab) said: “We are delighted to be able to use this funding to support our residents and help them to access courses and training sessions, as well as deliver jobs fairs and monthly Job Box events.
“Our aim as always is to reduce barriers to learning and employment in Madeley and Sutton Hill and build the confidence, wellbeing and aspirations of local people.”
Councillor Eileen Callear (Lab), Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for education, employment and visitor economy, said: “We are committed to helping people across Telford and Wrekin learn new skills and secure employment opportunities.
“This Madeley and Sutton Hill funding will help to cover the costs of free courses and training programmes which is excellent news for residents in these areas.”
