Telford & Wrekin Council is looking forward to Dawley Post Office reopening

Councillors Shaun Davies, Bob Wennington, Andy Burford, Ian Preece, Lord Kuldip Sahota and Raj Mehta have worked with Great Dawley Town Council to ensure the reopening of the post office at Lifestyle Express Top Shop, Burton Street in Dawley.

The Post Office is putting the finishing touches to the unit - including the installation of an ADSL line which will improve internet connectivity and allow the branch to open.

Long standing Dawley businessman Gurjinder Singh (Gurj) is the new postmaster and is housing the service at his convenience store.

The Post Office was previously based within the Co-op on Dawley High Street but the Co-op chose not to renew its lease in summer 2022.

Councillors worked with the Post Office and local businesses to find a permanent home for the service which has served many generations in Dawley.

The council has also worked to protect other post offices across the borough in recent years to make sure they remain a vital service within their communities.

In 2019, a motion was tabled by Cllr Paul Watling to block the closure of Madeley Post Office and councillors explored all options and worked with residents, businesses and partner organisations to ensure the service was retained.

The council’s business support team, Enterprise Telford, also worked with Madeley Post Office to offer them support and advice.

Opening hours for Dawley Post Office will be Monday to Saturday: 8am – 7pm and Sunday: 10am - 4pm.

The opening hours will mean 72 hours of Post Office service a week which is an extra 19 hours and 30 minutes of Post Office service than before.

This includes earlier opening and later closing making it easier for customers to visit and there will also be two Post Office counters alongside the retail counter.

Dawley Post Office will remain a mains branch offering a wide range of Post Office services.

Councillor Shaun Davies (Lab), Telford & Wrekin Council leader, said: “We are delighted that Dawley Post Office will be open permanently again very soon meaning the continuation of a service which has served the town for decades.

“Post offices provide an extremely valuable service for our residents and this adds to previous work and campaigns we’ve led in other towns across the borough to make sure this vital service is restored.

“We have made financial interventions through our Pride in Our High Street programme to keep Wellington and Madeley Post Offices open and also made an intervention in Sutton Hill to ensure that one remained in service as well.”

Once the ADSL line has been installed by BT on behalf of the Post Office, the opening date will be announced.
