New training to help over 65s get connected

A new digital skills programme is aiming to help over 65s in Telford and Wrekin get connected, and build their online confidence.

New training to help over 65s get connected

In partnership with STAY, Telford & Wrekin Council is funding new ‘Get Connected’ digital skills training courses, specifically for over 65s. The free courses consist of six two-hour sessions and offer help with essentials such as getting to grips with email, shopping safely online, and keeping in touch with friends and family.

They offer fun and informal support for beginners, as well as an opportunity to socialise, with a hot drink and biscuits included.

Councillor Rae Evans (Labour), Cabinet Member for Finance, Governance and Customer Services, said: “Not everyone has grown up with, or is comfortable with the technology that many of us take for granted, such as email and the internet. As more and more services move online, it’s important that people have the skills and confidence to access them safely, and benefit from the advantages the internet brings, such as online shopping, quicker and cheaper communication, such as video calling, all of which can make such a positive difference to your life!

“That’s why we’re working with STAY and funding these free six-week Get Connected courses for over 65s, through our £28m On Your Side investment programme. Each week sessions will help to safely navigate the online world with topics including emailing, shopping safely online, and keeping in touch with family and friends.

“If you have your own digital device, such as a tablet or smartphone, please bring it along. If you’re not sure you have a device you can bring, please get in touch and we may be able to help.”

Gavin Phillips, Digital Inclusion Coordinator at STAY Telford, added: “Digital inclusion is becoming increasingly important for the well-being, empowerment and equal opportunities of individuals and communities, it is now crucial for the overall growth and development of a society.”

The first two courses start in February, at the Hub on the Hill in Sutton Hill every Monday from 13 February, and at Wellington Civic and Leisure Centre every Thursday from 16 February. These will be followed by other locations, after Easter.

Courses are free but spaces are limited, so booking is essential. To book, call 01952 380000 or visit:
