Surface dressing involves applying and rolling aggregate ‘chippings’ onto a bitumen binder. This seals the surface, improves surface texture and prolongs the life of the roads by many years. It’s an efficient and cost-effective way of preventing potholes, maintaining skid-resistance and waterproofing road surfaces.

Councillor Lee Carter (Labour) Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services, Regeneration and the High Street said: “While each piece of resurfacing work is in smaller, residential areas, the improvements the work will be bring will be noticeable in improving road surfaces.

“The work forms part of the council’s ambitious four-year investment programme to protect, care and invest to create a better borough and between 2020 and 2024 we will have ploughed more than £50m to keep neighbourhoods safe, clean and well connected.

The work costing £640k, forms a major part of the council’s annual road maintenance programme, and is being carried out alongside other preventative and reactive maintenance work and started on Tuesday, 26 April and is due to complete by mid-June.

Sites have been identified as being in need of essential maintenance through combined local engineering judgment and asset management data and forms part of a borough wide programme of schemes, to deliver improvements in the most efficient and cost-effective way.

Please note that some dates may change, depending on operational considerations and weather conditions.

Highways contractor Balfour Beatty will complete the work along with specialist sub-contractors RMS and traffic management will generally be stop/go and lane restrictions to minimise disruption, although closures may be required on small cul de sac locations.

A full list of locations is available online and closures will be in place between 8am and 5pm, weekdays only.
