Covid-19 cases continue to drop in Telford and Wrekin

The number of new coronavirus cases in Telford and Wrekin has again fallen for the sixth week in a row, the latest figures show.

There were 505 new Covid-19 cases reported for Telford and Wrekin during the last seven-day period (21-27 February), 188 less than the 693 recorded in the previous seven-day period.

For the week ending 27 February:

• 505 new Covid-19 cases reported, 188 less compared to the previous week.

• The seven-day infection rate for Telford and Wrekin is 279 cases of Covid-19 per 100,000

• For the West Midlands, the seven-day infection rate is 232 cases of Covid-19 per 100,000

• For England, the seven-day infection rate is 295 cases of Covid-19 per 100,000

• Sadly, four further deaths have been reported within 28 days of a positive Covid-19 test. (The total number of borough deaths since the start of the pandemic is 343.)

• There were 49 patients with Covid-19 in local hospitals on 2 March, compared with 43 patients on 23 February.

Liz Noakes, Telford and Wrekin's Director for Public Health, said:

"It's fabulous to see Covid-19 cases continuing to drop in our borough.  This is all thanks to our residents’ efforts who followed the rules and got vaccinated in such a high number.

“With the virus still circulating in our communities and with a high number of patients with Covid-19 in local hospitals, continuing to follow good public health behaviours (such as good hand hygiene, wearing a face-covering in crowded places, and staying home when unwell) is still vitally important.

“Free testing continues to be available until 31 March so please consider using rapid tests when you meet with people at greater risk of severe illness with Covid.

“Let’s continue to do all we can to protect especially our most vulnerable people in the community- thank you.”

Cllr Kelly Middleton, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Public Health and Well-Being, Equalities and Partnerships (Labour), added:

"Our borough continues to have a high vaccination rate - an acknowledgement of our residents’ commitment to keep themselves and our most vulnerable members of the community as Covid-safe as possible.

“Vaccines remain our first line of defence against Covid-19. We will continue to work with our NHS partners to ensure vaccines are easily accessible across the borough – especially as around 29,000 residents are yet to have any vaccinations.

"It’s never too late to get vaccinated. Many residents still come forward to get their jabs and boosters, some were at first hesitant, others couldn't get fully vaccinated due to catching Covid.

“Everyone is welcome to drop-by at a vaccination clinic as they continue to be open across the borough.

"You can check the list of local clinics on Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin Integrated Care System website. “
