Residents urged to be on their guard against energy grant cold callers

Telford & Wrekin Council is warning residents to be on their guard against cold callers offering energy grants.

Residents urged to be on their guard against energy grant cold callers

The callers say they are offering grants under the Green Homes Grant Voucher Scheme which has now been withdrawn by Central Government.

There are schemes in Telford that provide support for residents but some unscrupulous companies who are not registered with these schemes may try to take advantage.

The best way to check if a company is qualified to do the works is to check Trustmark accreditation at www.trustmark.org.uk

Telford & Wrekin Council, in partnership with Marches Energy Agency, offer a hotline 0800 677 1952 for residents to get free information and advice on all aspects of energy efficiency and affordable warmth including grant support for those on low incomes.

Councillor Richard Overton (Lab), Telford & Wrekin Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Housing, Enforcement and Transport, said: “We are hearing reports of cold callers approaching residents on the doorstep and on the phone offering these services, some of which include ‘one time only special  offers or ‘today only discount’ to try and encourage people to sign up straight away.

“Telford & Wrekin Council has not authorised door knocking on its behalf, nor does it work in partnership with or promote contractors or check the quality of work, unless it is a scheme that carries our logo - such as Local Area Delivery or the Home Upgrade Grant.

“Our advice to people is not to sign up to anything without checking and not to give out any personal details to cold callers.

“If it is a scheme we endorse, ID’s will be shown, a password system will operate and appointments will be offered.”

Telford Energy Advice provides free and impartial information on grants including Green Home Grants and ECO, as well as advice on energy bills and keeping warm at home.
