Local cases up, as Omicron spreads in Telford and Wrekin

• 1,090 new Covid-19 cases reported, 114 more compared to the previous week

• The seven-day infection rate for Telford and Wrekin is 601 cases of Covid-19 per 100,000

• For the West Midlands, the seven-day infection rate is 616 cases of Covid-19 per 100,000

• For England, the seven-day infection rate is 948 cases of Covid-19 per 100,000

• Sadly, three further deaths have been reported within 28 days of a positive Covid-19 test. The total number of borough deaths since the start of the pandemic is 302.

• There were 16 patients with Covid-19 in local hospitals as of 22 December

Liz Noakes, Telford and Wrekin's Director for Public Health, said:

“It’s a national vaccination race against the fast spreading Omicron and our borough is very much part of it.

"Thank you to every eligible local resident who has come forward for their booster since the government declared an Omicron emergency.

“Around 20,500 people have been boosted so far in our borough in just over a week Monday and the number is climbing rapidly every day – which is great news!

“But we still have a long way to ensure everyone eligible in our community is protected as much as possible against Omicron.

“The vaccination teams are hard at work across the borough right up to Christmas Eve and again from Boxing Day.

“If you are 18 or over and had your second dose 3 months (91 days ago), don’t delay any longer and get boosted this festive season. It’s also not too late to get your first or second dose.

Walk-in to a local clinic – no appointment needed, no queues or long waiting times. Just turn up and you could be done with your jab within minutes.

“There are clinics open even on Christmas Eve such as Woodside Pharmacy, 8am-1pm and Telford and Wrekin Interfaith Council building, 9am-2pm.

“Telford International Centre is closed on Christmas Eve but re-opens on Monday, 27 December, 8am-6pm every day (apart from New Year’s Day).

“As we fully enter the festive season, I want to wish everyone a happy, healthy and Covid-free Christmas and New Year.

“Let's enjoy these holidays safely and not let covid in our homes.

Taking a rapid test before Christmas and New Year gatherings, letting fresh air in regularly, remembering hands, face and space – all these do help to protect ourselves and our loved ones.

“Thank you and Merry Christmas!”

Cllr Andy Burford, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, added:

“We have made such a great progress in the last week, with high vaccination rates in our borough.

“Thank you to the vaccination teams, to our staff, partners, volunteers who are tirelessly working even throughout this festive season to get the booster in the arms of everyone eligible.

“If you haven’t come forward yet for your booster or your first or second jab -   now is the time.

“Roll up your sleeve and head over to a local walk-in clinic or book an appointment on the NHS website.

“Getting boosted is the best gift for our families so we all make a safer start in the New Year!”
