Council helping young people in care get off to a flying start

Organisations are encouraged to pledge their support, along with Telford and Wrekin Council to help young people leaving care.

Council helping young people in care get off to a flying start

The Care Leaver Covenant is a national inclusion programme that supports care leavers to live independently and relies on local organisations to provide opportunities.

To help young people leaving care and support the promises, the council is looking for businesses, organisations and charities that can offer their time and support in different ways from training opportunities, job preparation or discounted offers and goods to name a few.

Councillor Shirley Reynolds, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills said:

“For many young people, the transition to adulthood is usually a time of excitement and growth to build skills for the future. However young people leaving care face challenges early on and their time is often spent in uncertainty.

“With the council’s help, local businesses can join in the Care Leaver Covenant and become part of a wider corporate family for our care leavers who don’t benefit from the support normally offered by their own family.

“This opportunity is a positive way for organisations to extend corporate social responsibility and build a strong ethos of business contribution across Telford and Wrekin.

“We would be delighted for organisations to get in touch with us on twcareleavers@telford.gov.uk and find out what difference in becoming a signatory for Care Leavers Covenant can make for them and for the life of a young person leaving care.”

Telford and Wrekin Council’s covenant is made up of seven promises to help young adults, aged 16-25 to be individual, safe and healthy, help fulfil their ambitions, build strong relationships, develop independence and ensure they are listened to, respected and valued.

Local businesses, organisations and charities can get in touch with the Council at twcareleavers@telford.gov.uk to find out more about the Care Leaver Covenant and how they can help the young people leaving care in the borough.
