Armed Forces Day 2021

Today Telford & Wrekin Council has raised its Armed Forces flag to show its support ahead of national Armed Forces Day which is happening on Saturday 26 June. The flag will be raised for two weeks until Friday 2 July.

Councillor Shaun Davies, Leader of Telford & Wrekin Council said: “We are extremely grateful to all our servicemen and women who are committed to protecting our country, and also to their families who support them throughout their service.
“It is important that always we remember the sacrifices that our service men and women have made for our country. With over 10,000 veterans living locally it is our priority to ensure that they have all of the support and information that they need and as a council we offer help around housing, education, finance, jobs and also year round leisure discounts.”

The council signed the Armed Forces Covenant in 2012 and since then has been awarded the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award which recognises their support for the principles of covenant.

Lt Colonel Toby Gaddum, HQ 11 Signal and West Midlands Brigade Venning Barracks said: “After a challenging year for all of us today’s flag raising not only looks forward to Armed Forces week but more importantly recognises the continued close association between Telford and Wrekin Council and the Armed Forces Community.

“Those of us who live and work on behalf of the Armed Forces within the Telford and Wrekin community feel very proud with our long standing association with this community.

“I feel honoured to represent the Armed Forces here today and very much hope that the next 12 months will be easier for all of us than the last.”

The council look forward to celebrating Armed Forces Day 2021 and hope to host their Armed Forces family fun event in Donnington on Sunday 27 June. More details around this event will be announced in the coming days in line with government guidance.
