Join the Great British Spring Clean in Telford and Wrekin

Telford & Wrekin Council and local communities are coming together to support Keep Britain Tidy’s annual Great British Spring Clean and calling on others to lend a hand too.

Join the Great British Spring Clean in Telford and Wrekin

This year’s event runs until 13 June, and there are plenty of litter picks happening in local communities across the borough.

Councillors, council staff, Street Champions, Climate Change Champions, Community Action Teams, community groups, individuals and businesses are all rolling up their sleeves and taking part.

Cllr Lee Carter, Telford & Wrekin Council cabinet member for neighbourhood, commercial services and regeneration, said: “It is great to see everyone coming together to help care for our borough. Their contribution is on top of our record investment in keeping our streets and green spaces clean and green.

“This year’s event coincides with National Volunteers’ Week, which is an opportunity for us to thank volunteers for all they do. Our volunteer Street Champions have been even busier than usual with the Great British Spring Clean, and I would personally like to say an extra big thank you to them.”

Cllr Paul Watling, cabinet member for cooperative communities, engagement and partnerships, is also keen to thank volunteers taking part in this year’s spring clean. He said: “It’s lovely to see volunteers working with us to keep Telford and Wrekin a clean and tidy place. This is what the Great British Spring Clean is about, everyone doing their bit for our environment.”

As well as local litter picks, the council is working with partners to hold a collective plastic free litter pick in various locations on 12 June.  Litter pickers taking part on the day will be encouraged to separate recyclables and general waste into two bags in a shared mission to pick up litter and recycle.

Times and locations for the plastic free litter picks on 12 June:

  • 11am - Rough Park, Woodside
  • 11am - Ironbridge
  • 10am - Dawley Pools
  • 10am-12pm - Dawley Park and Malinslee
  • 10am - Wellington area
  • 10am-12pm - Oakengates/The Cockshutt
  • 10am - Admaston Green

Cllr Carolyn Healy, Telford & Wrekin Council cabinet member for climate change, green spaces, natural and historic environment, said: “Everyone taking part in the plastic free litter picks on Saturday 12 June will be helping us in our mission to create a better borough and be carbon neutral by 2030.

“Millions of things that could be reused or recycled end up thrown away or littered. As well as messing up our environment, litter does unimaginable harm to our wildlife.

“I hope people will join one of the events planned. I will be leading the event in Ironbridge and would welcome the extra pairs of hands. Together we can make a difference.”

Anyone wanting to lend a hand on 12 June will need to register in advance due to Covid guidelines. For more information or to take part in these events email: pride.officer@telford.gov.uk.

Individuals, groups and organisations can register their own litter pick during the Great British Spring Clean at www.keepbritaintidy.org/gbspringclean.
