Green Brigade to recruit young people for skills course

The Green Brigade is being put together by a partnership of organisations including the council’s Pride In Your Community programme, the Turnaround project, Telford Job Box, Parks for People and the Telford Green Space Partnership.

It will offer young people not in employment, education or training an opportunity to gain a range of practical skills in environment and conservation as well as providing taster sessions in construction. They will also be able to improve their employability skills such as CV writing.

The course takes place between 9.30am and 3pm and will run for twelve weeks on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Participants will be able to take advantage of free bus travel and lunch and those who complete the course are guaranteed to be given an interview for a council apprenticeship in environment.

The recruit who performs the best throughout the course will be given the opportunity to get an official qualification for the use of machinery through a course provided by Harper Adams University.

Recruitment to the Green Brigade Project closes on Thursday 2 October and young people can register to join by calling 01952 388830 or emailing turnaround@telford.gov.uk The courses start on 7 October.

Councillor Shaun Davies, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for Employment and Skills, said: “We are totally committed to raising the aspirations of the borough’s young and the best way to do this is increase their skills to make them more appealing to employers.

“Projects like the Green Brigade are aimed at achieving exactly that and I would urge anyone who knows a young person who fits the bill to make them aware of this.

“We have a duty to ensure that the our young people live the very best lives possible and their self esteem and confidence will only increase as they acquire more skills and take advantage of more opportunities.”
