Residents in Telford and Wrekin due to receive their new food waste caddies

Veolia, the recycling and waste contractor for Telford & Wrekin Council, is busy packing up the caddies ready for distribution next week (19 August 2019).

Householders will receive a seven litre kitchen caddy with free biodegradable liners and a user guide, along with an outdoor 23ltr caddy to  present at the kerbside every week with their other containers. The new recycling service will turn the town’s unwanted food waste into energy and fertiliser for farming via anaerobic digestion.

Steve Mitchell, Director-West Midlands for Veolia said “This is a really exciting time for us at Veolia, months of planning have gone into ensuring we deliver an easily usable and efficient service to Telford residents. The service has also meant we have created another 12 new jobs which is great.

“We will be delivering 78,000 food waste caddies over two weeks ready for residents to use in September. Recycling food waste is a crucial step to improving the town’s recycling rate and we would encourage everyone to give it a go to help reduce the amount of waste we put into the red top wheelie bin.”

Councillor Richard Overton, Telford & Wrekin Council cabinet member for recycling, said: “Together we already recycle over 48% of our household waste in Telford and Wrekin which is great.  We are always looking for new opportunities to recycle more though, and I know lots of residents were keen to see food recycling brought in. I am looking forward to getting started and hope others will support this initiative and that using the caddies will become second nature to us.”
