New funding available to get Telford moving
Grants up to the value of £5,000 are being made available to groups and organisations with the aim of encouraging people to be more active
The ‘Get Active Telford’ fund, available from Telford & Wrekin Council, is a one off award to create more opportunities for activities in the borough - mainly for beginners - either through tasters, a series of sessions or one off events.
Grants of up to £5,000 per group are available as a cost-effective, community-based way of improving health and wellbeing through activity.
The funding is for local groups and organisations to create activities and events that build people’s confidence and increase opportunities to participate in regular activity or inspire somebody to have a go.
Councillor Arnold England, cabinet member for health and wellbeing said: “We’re encouraging people with ideas to improve people’s wellbeing to come forward and make them a reality.
“The sessions and events we’re encouraging, build community spirit by providing a safe and supportive environment for people to get active, particularly for those who struggle or who are just starting out.
“Group events and sessions in particular, offer positive and friendly places for all ages and inspire people to make a regular commitment to being active long after a session or event has passed. The Telford Parkrun is a perfect example with record attendance on New Year’s day of almost 700 people taking part. More activities such as this can only be a positive thing.”
Applications are open to any organisation/group who want to make a difference and get more people active in Telford and Wrekin. Examples might include a Zumba marathon - a form of aerobics based around dance – beginner’s football or swimming sessions, couch to 5k running programs, or a series of walks.
There are many health related benefits to being physically active and as part of Telford & Wrekin Council’s Active Lifestyles, funding to the value of £50,000 has been made available to promote active lifestyles and events.
