Telford’s High Flyers
High flyers from Telford will be attending a prestigious presentation evening on September 6 as part of Telford & Wrekin Council’s Young People’s Grant Scheme.
Some 55 applicants, registered for the scheme and 43 have been awarded grants to support them in their chosen fields ranging from digital media, graphic illustration to dance, drama, wheelchair football and a whole range of other sports.
The grants for young people up to the age of 25, ranged from £100 up to £300 and be used to buy specific equipment, pay for training courses and coaching fees.
Just over 50 per cent of applicants fell into the sporting category, 33 per cent from performing arts with the remainder looking for support with education and training.
Councillor Shaun Davies, Leader and Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services & Pride Programme said: “While we had slightly fewer applicants than in 2017, the range of disciplines was far greater which we are really pleased about. It means we’ve been able to reach out to a broader range of people - ultimately supporting the diverse range of skills and talents in the borough.
“We had a special criteria for 2018, asking for young people who have overcome challenging circumstances to achieve their aspirations or have been identified as gifted and talented to come forward and some of the application stories are just amazing.
“We have some incredibly talented people, some represent Great Britain and are ranked number one in the world. Others have shown incredible resilience and overcome serious physical and mental challenges.
“We’re incredibly proud and believe these achievements and the families and mentors that support these young people should be celebrated and supported.”
The scheme is funded by savings from reductions to Cabinet allowances. In 2011, when Labour took over the authority, the council’s Cabinet chose to forgo ten per cent of its special responsibility allowance, helping to create a bursary fund for 2018 of £12,000.
Any applicants who are unsuccessful, or missed the application can find a list of other bursaries available here
