Comic-con fun palace event at Southwater library

National graphic novel Laureate Charlie Adlard will attend a combined comic-themed and fun palace event on Saturday, 7 October at Telford & Wrekin Council’s Southwater Library.

Mr Adlard, originally from Shrewsbury is best known for his creations in the Walking Dead series, The X-Files, Mars Attacks and Judge Dredd. He will be meeting visitors to promote comic books as an important form of literature and judge a fancy dress competition.

Packed with activities for all ages from a free comic trail and Lego workshops throughout the day for younger children to big screen streaming of manga drawing workshops and coding activities.

Get inspired by life-size models of a Dalek and the TARDIS then have go at building your own or try the manga YouTube tutorials by international comic artist Karen Rubins being shown on the media walls.

The sessions are being held on the first floor of the library for anyone hoping to develop skills in the unique Japanese style of animation. The session from 11.30-12.30pm is aimed at children aged five to 12 while the afternoon slot between 2.30-3.30pm is for young people aged 12 and over.

Science-fiction fans can use a Dalek microphone to create their own stories while a Minecraft activity offers a platform for game coding and will be available for visitors to experience first-hand through the library’s tablets.

Councillor Rae Evans, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for Customer Services, Tourism and Partnerships, said: “This event is really exciting and brand new for Telford. We try to ensure events we run are engaging and gaming and coding are really important to younger generations.

“Hopefully lots of people will take up the opportunity to experience the sessions in our wonderful library.”

Comic book stall holders will attend too and a host prizes will be up for grabs like cinema and theatre tickets and comic goodies for the best costumes.

The event is open from 10:30am to 3:30pm and is completely free. Workshops places are limited so reserve your place via the library’s Facebook events page or call 01952 382915.
