Ski jumping legend and subject of 2016 movie of the same name, Eddie ‘the Eagle’ Edwards is heading to Telford Snowboard and Ski Centre in Madeley at the beginning of November.
Eddie will be appearing at a special day at Telford Snowboard and Ski Centre and taking part in a question and answer session in the lodge for people to find out more about his life, his love of ski jumping and his experience of competing at the Olympics.
On Thursday 3 November, Eddie will arrive around 3pm to check out a lesson on the slope for Madeley Academy pupils. He’ll then make his way to the lodge where he will be competing at ski jumping against members of the public on the Nintendo Wii.
At 4.30pm members of the public will have the opportunity to ask Eddie questions before he heads back home after a busy few days.
There be lots more going on in the day too with tubing on the main slope and tobogganing/tots donuts on the nursery slope at 3.30pm. Ski club demonstrations will be taking place at 5pm, and free ski taster sessions will be available from 6-8pm.
Enjoying a resurgence in popularity since the Eddie the Eagle film was released in cinemas earlier this year, Eddie shot to fame in the 80s as the nation’s only ever ski jumper, funding his own way to his Olympic dreams.
Ranked 55th in the world, as the only British competitor he competed at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics, yet despite coming last in both the 70m and 90m events, he became quite the international phenomenon and remains today a national record holder for British ski jumping.
Councillor Richard Overton, cabinet member for Housing Leisure and Health, said: “I’m delighted that Eddie is coming to the borough to see the fantastic ski and snowboard facilities we have here. He is a legend, not least for his determination to compete regardless of the obstacles in his way, and I hope that positivity makes a lasting impression on everyone who meets him on the day.”
Not only will Eddie be making a special appearance at the slope, he will also be a guest at the Energize Awards at Telford International Centre that evening.
Tamsin Foster, Marketing and Communications Manager at Energize, said: “We’re delighted to have secured Eddie Edwards as guest of honour for this year’s Energize Awards and are so pleased that he will also be paying a visit to Telford Snowboard and Ski Centre, who are kindly sponsoring Eddie’s appearance at the Awards.
“Eddie is bound to have some great words of advice to any budding local skiers who will no-doubt be inspired by his never-say-die attitude, and determination to succeed without the help of sponsorship or funding.”
Everyone is welcome to come along on the day, and no booking is required to take part in the tubing or donuts. Booking is required however for the taster ski sessions from 6-8pm. These sessions are booked on a first com, first served basis by calling 01952 382688.
