Giant success for giant carnival
Over 12,000 people came to Telford Town Park on Saturday to experience the biggest event so far this year in the borough – Carnival of Giants.
Back for its second year, Carnival of Giants was this year themed around dinosaurs, proving popular with children and adults of all ages.
Bigger and better than before, Telford Town Park’s QEII Arena was filled with activity and dino based fun, with a parade from Southwater to the arena at 2pm being one of the highlights of the day.
Barnum the baby T-Rex made his first UK appearance at the event, with Close Act, Festive Road and the Travelling Natural History Museum bringing with them an eclectic mix of dinosaurs, from dinos on a bike frame to dinos on stilts!
The weather held out for the parade which included 500 children and adults carrying dinosaur bones and prehistoric flowers made in the lead up to the event by local schools and community groups, with many of those people enjoying taking part in the parade.
Dutch street art company, Close Act’s dinosaurs, the three Saurus and musicians Skiband, headed up the parade which began at Southwater and ended at the arena.
In addition to all the dinosaur based action, a fun fair, giant deckchair and dressing up box, street games, dance classes, accessible bikes, carnival games and more were on offer throughout the day for the crowds to enjoy, along with all the free play equipment the town park has to offer.
Councillor Liz Clare, cabinet member for Culture, Sport, Parks and Green Spaces, said: “The success of Carnival of Giants has been phenomenal. Telford Town Park and the surrounding areas of Southwater and Telford Town Centre have never been so busy.
“Not only have we been able to showcase our fantastic event, but visitors have also been able to see and enjoy everything else that Telford centre has to offer from the outstanding new Southwater development to the excellent facilities within Telford Shopping centre and our award winning park.
“Our growth depends on a local as well as regional visiting public and I have no doubt that Carnival of Giants on Saturday will have benefited the local economy greatly.”
Feedback from the day was overwhelmingly positive, with carnival goers giving the day a big thumbs up:
“It was a great event. My family travelled over from Worcestershire especially to see it with us”
“What a wonderful parade, thanks to all involved, we loved it!”
“…We absolutely loved the day. We stayed far longer than planned and just loved every second. Well organised, lots to see and do and a free way to entertain the whole family. It was the first time we have been to an event like this and it won't be the last. Thanks again!!”
Carnival of Giants was made possible using public funding from the National Lottery through Arts Council Grants for the Arts and sponsorship from Telford Shopping Centre.
Carnival of Giants is set to return next year with a different theme, but in the meantime for all those dinosaur mad children and adults out there, sponsors Telford Shopping Centre will be transporting you back more than 66 million year this summer from 23 July to 6 August when it too is invaded by dinosaurs.
Star of the show will be Dorothy, a seven metre tall animatronic Tyrannosaurus Rex who will come to life every 30 minutes from 10am-4pm on 23-24 and 30-31 July and 6 August.
