New era for Oakengates market
A successful example of partnership working between a parish council and Telford & Wrekin Council has led to the handover of a market to be managed locally.
Working in partnership for the benefit of residents and visitors Oakengates Town Council has taken ownership of the market from Telford & Wrekin Council in a move that is sure to help ease the financial pressures that the borough council is under as it works through its most difficult budget to date.
The successful handover of the market took place last Saturday (9 JUL) in a seamless transition.
Telford & Wrekin Council has made no secret of its desire to build effective working partnerships with town and parish councils to reduce the impact of the current budget that is putting pressure on many Council service areas.
The partnership between Telford & Wrekin Council and Oakengates Town Council to transfer ownership of the market is an excellent example of the positive outcomes that can be achieved where a common goal is shared.
Councillor Lee Carter, cabinet member for Finance, Partnerships and Commercial Services, said: “I’m delighted that Oakengates market has been handed over to Oakengates Town Council to run.
“Such a service being managed locally can only have a positive impact and I’m sure it will take the market from strength to strength; being run in the town for the town.
“Partnership working such as what has been demonstrated between Oakengates Town Council and Telford & Wrekin Council eases the pressure on us as we continue to implement our toughest budget to date.
“I’d like to thank Oakengates Town Council for coming forward to sustain the market and would encourage other town and parish councils to follow their lead and see what opportunities partnership working will bring locally for your own residents and visitors.”
Councillor Stephen Reynolds, Mayor of Oakengates Town Council, added: “This is really great news. Oakengates market has a long tradition, it brings a vibrant atmosphere to the town, and I think it’s fantastic for the community that we are now running it locally at the Town Council.
“I’m pleased that Telford & Wrekin Council worked alongside us to ensure a seamless transition and I am sure the market will benefit from being managed on such a local level by us at Oakengates Town Council.”
