Southwood opens its doors
A new hub for vulnerable people has been officially opened in Telford.
Southwood Activity & Wellbeing Hub’s opening follows the completion of the building, and the service’s relocation from Halesfield, which has been part of the Council’s redevelopment of Hollinswood Local Centre.
Southwood Activity & Wellbeing Hub is a service for vulnerable people,
delivering personalised, high quality activities which promote choice, health, wellbeing and independence.
Southwood is one of the service’s community hubs which aim to support people to not only develop skills for independence such as cooking, travel training, money management but also to access a wide range of activities in the community.
This includes outdoor pursuits such as hill walking, fishing, boating, horse riding, sports and leisure activities such as football, swimming, zumba cycling, skating and kick boxing to name just a few.
These are all supported by a highly trained and enthusiastic team that are committed to delivering an excellent service to customers.
Opening the hub, Councillor Arnold England, cabinet member for Adult Social Care, said: “Recognising the changing needs of our customers and, following consultation with our customers and their carers, we decided we needed to relocate our community activity and wellbeing service from the previous property, which was a big factory unit in Halesfield, to a modern facility in the heart of the community.
“The improved services that will be delivered following the Council’s investment in the new centre shows the Council’s commitment to services and facilities for the most vulnerable residents in the borough. The opening of Southwood will also allow the development of new services for vulnerable young people and adults including the transition from full-time education, and becoming a centre of excellence for supporting customers with challenging behaviour, mental health needs, young people needing care and older people."
Deb Williams, Service Delivery Manager of ‘My Options’ - Activity, Wellbeing and Care Services, said: “The benefit of us being here, right in the middle of Hollinswood, is that we are not only local to Telford Town Park and Southwater, but we are also working with local parish councils in sharing the facilities, so the community can use it as well.”
Southwood Activity & Wellbeing Hub is part of the Council’s My Options - Activity Wellbeing and Care Services, which provide a wide range of individually-tailored support to vulnerable adults and young people including support for people with learning disabilities, mental health needs, young people leaving care and older people.
Services include registered residential support, Community Activity and Wellbeing services, a Shared Lives scheme as well as providing individual support to people in the community and in their own homes.
