Concerns police command changes could harm borough
The leader of Telford & Wrekin Council has voiced his concerns over possible changes to West Mercia Police that could do away with a dedicated Telford policing team and commander.
The force has confirmed that it is looking to review leadership arrangements for the Force in Telford and Shropshire. The Council fears that this could be replaced with a single command unit for Telford and Shropshire.
Council leader Shaun Davies has written to both borough MPs to seek their support and to both West Mercia’s Chief Constable and Police and Crime Commissioner expressing his concerns.
Councillor Davies says that moves that reduce the Telford’s area command could harm community safety in Telford and Wrekin and see police resources targeted away from the borough.
Councillor Davies said: “We are a fast growing area and the biggest population centre. To decrease police resources here would be a very backward step.
“I have written to both MPs to express my concerns about this issue and I trust that any changes to command arrangements will be fully and openly consulted upon.
“Any changes must recognise our borough’s needs and we will continue to make this point most forcefully.”
