Young local singers head to Royal Albert Hall

270 local children will join together with others from across the UK to form a 2000-strong choir for the AC Academy Does the Royal Albert Hall gala concert, cheered on by proud family and friends.

Formed through the AC Academy’s Choir Creations scheme in local partnership with Telford & Wrekin Music Hub the huge choir will perfom songs from around the world.

They will be accompanied on stage by internationally renowned musicians from London’s West End and joined for a special guest appearance by BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing stars Kevin and Karen Clifton.

AC Academy is the music education programme of Armonico Consort which develops and supports choirs and choir leaders through its in-school Choir Creations scheme and out of school AC Academy Choirs.

The celebration is a landmark point in its mission to create 300 new children’s choirs and 300 choir leaders by 2020, providing a singing legacy across the UK, with over 100 being created to date.

Councillor  Liz Clare, cabinet member for Culture, Sports, Parks and Green Spaces, said: “I’m absolutely delighted for each and every one of these young singers who will be participating in the spectacular event on Tuesday at the Royal Albert Hall.  This is a great achievement and they, along with their families and friends, should all be very proud of themselves.

“I’m equally thrilled that over a tenth of the singers will be from Telford and Wrekin, a fact that proves how committed we are in the borough to develop and enhance the skills, experiences and opportunities for all of our young residents.

“Congratulations, and good luck for Tuesday.”

Christopher Monks, Artistic Director of Armonico Consort, said: “The Royal Albert Hall gala aims to set 2000 hearts alight through the life-enhancing powers of performance and commitment as well as to thank those schools who have joined the Choir Creations project and kept their choirs going on a regular basis.”
