Commonwealth Day ceremony

A short ceremony has taken place to raise the Commonwealth Flag on the roof of Addenbrooke House, one of Telford & Wrekin Council's main buildings.

The event took place to mark the 2016 Fly A Flag For The Commonwealth event and was attended by council leader Councillor Kuldip Sahota, borough mayor Councillor Leon Murray, council managing director Richard Partington and Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire, Algernon Heber Percy.

Councillor Sahota read a message from the retiring Commonwealth Secretary General, Kamalesh Sharma. It included the lines: "The awareness brought by local and national flag raising ceremonies and the associated activities, bring greater understanding and appreciation of the values and principles that animate the Commonwealth Charter."

The Commonwealth Affirmation was read by Councillor Murray after the flag was raised. This said: "Joining together as members of one worldwide Commonwealth community and valuing the personal dignity and worth of every citizen , we raise this flag as a symbol of the ties of kinship and affinity that we cherish."
