Telford Aftercare Team scoops national award
A Telford & Wrekin Council team which provides mutual aid, aftercare and support for people recovering from drugs and alcohol addiction has won a prestigious national award.
The Telford Aftercare Team (TACT) won the Public Health category of the Local Government Chronicle awards – the largest and most well respected accolades in local government.
The awards showcase creativity, intelligence and determination and aim to recognise innovation and exceptional achievement.
This year’s awards generated 663 entries from 222 organisations and Telford & Wrekin Council has won a major category despite stiff competition from across the UK.
TACT are all ex service users and most work on a voluntary basis to help others on their recovery journey.
TACT is the lynchpin of the Telford and Wrekin Drug and Alcohol Strategy, which is based on intelligence of local need, views of service users and best practice guidance.
Building recovery has become a key pillar of the strategy since TACT launched in 2012. TACT is funded by the council through the public health grant and some funding from the West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner.
Significant achievements by the team include TACT being established as a Community Interest Company, at least 20 people per day accessing the services, new premises opened to enable expansion in numbers and opportunities offered and the establishment of a Hepatitis C support group.
Councillor Richard Overton, cabinet member for Public Health, said: “I am delighted that TACT has succeeded in scooping a major national award despite extremely stiff competition from all over the country.
“TACT is a powerful source of motivation and provides role models which often prove decisive in recovery and reintegration.
“There is no doubt that TACT is making a difference to people's lives and we are incredibly proud of the team's work in creating our own vibrant recovery community in Telford and Wrekin.
“I would like to say a big well done to everyone involved in the team who has made this success possible.”
