VE Day Anniversary at Southwater
Friday 8 May 2015 is the 70th Anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe Day) and to mark this a special beacon will be lit in Telford.
The event will commemorate the end of the Second World War in Europe and the day that peace broke out after nearly six years of war.
The beacon in Telford will be lit after sundown along with over 100 beacons, throughout the UK, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.
The beacons are two metres high and will burn in the shape of a ‘V’ to symbolise the momentous anniversary.
The Telford beacon will be on the edge of Telford Town Park overlooking the Southwater lake and will be lit at 9.30pm on Friday 8 May, where it will burn for around 45 minutes.
Before the lighting of the beacon, there will be a short commemorative tribute where a bugler will play the General Salute to remember the men and women of the armed forces who gave their lives for their country, and those who returned injured.
During Friday, a two minute silence will also take place at 3pm to mark VE Day.
