Help to create the Festival Giant
Creative people in and around Telford and Wrekin are being asked to come along to a series of artistic workshops to help produce a number of colourful giants and magical puppets for the Carnival of Giants event next month.
This is a great opportunity for people who have a passion for art to learn skills from professional artists. The giant and puppet sculptures will be paraded through Southwater to Telford Town Park on Saturday 6 June.
Telford & Wrekin Council have joined forces with the Liverpool Lantern Company to host four workshops at Stafford Park 15, Units A4 and A5 on Saturday 23 May, Sunday 24 May, Saturday 30 May and Sunday 31 May, between 10am and 2pm.
The Liverpool Lantern Company, who are internationally recognised for their unusual artistic work for festivals and carnival parades, will also work with local schools and community groups in the coming weeks to create smaller items for people to carry such as fish, birds and butterflies. They will also be bringing along some of their own impressive giants which they have previously made for other events.
Anyone who would like to go along to the workshops should call 01952 380987 to pre-register. Or email firstname.lastname@example.org
Psyche Hudson, Telford & Wrekin Council’s Arts & Culture Services Manager, said: “This is a great opportunity for people living in Telford and Wrekin who have with a passion for art and creativity to get involved in a local community project. No previous experience necessary, just enthusiasm and a desire to get involved.
“Volunteers will be able to help create the giants and other sculptures which will be at the centre of the parade – this is a rare opportunity and one which we hope they will feel very proud of on the day.”
The main event will also feature a market of local food and craft stalls within the QEII Fields In Trust Town Park Arena, music, local dance groups and cheerleaders performing, bhangra dancing, a host of sporting and cultural activities to take part in and a giant tea party for all to enjoy.
