Town centre partners to consult on new bus station location

Telford & Wrekin Council and bus company Arriva Midlands are to consult local residents next week on plans for a new bus station in Telford town centre.

Town centre partners to consult on new bus station location

New plans will see the current outdated and underutilised bus station replaced with a new facility on the other side of Northfield Street, formerly known as Coach Central.

This will allow the redevelopment of the existing bus station site, as part of the £200m plans for the regeneration of Telford Shopping Centre, creating new jobs and a more active, retail frontage onto Northfield Street.

The new bus station will be located at the southern end of the existing Brown Elm car park and will provide a new, improved facility for passengers.  The existing facility will remain open while the new one is built minimising disruption

Telford & Wrekin Council has secured £1.3m through The Marches Local Enterprise Partnership Growth Deal to make the change.

The new bus station will provide better facilities for passengers and will still be in a central location, with easy access to and from the Shopping Centre as well as the new Southwater, Southern Quarter and ASDA developments.  It also unlocks new development opportunity on the existing bus station site.

The Council is joining Arriva at consultation events next week, which are taking place on Tuesday June 2 between 9.30am-12.30pm at Telford Shopping Centre and Thursday June 4 between 9.30-12 noon at the new ASDA.

Councillor Angela McClements, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for Communities, Regeneration and Transport, said: “The funding provides us with a fantastic opportunity to provide a modern town centre bus station while freeing up the existing site for the Shopping Centre to create new retail opportunities and create new jobs.”

“We are very much looking forward to hearing the views of residents on the proposed new location for the bus station and to understand what they want to see in a new bus station so that this can be fed into the design process.”

There will be further detailed consultation during July with a view to a planning application being submitted by the end of that month.
