Telford junior parkrun attracts young runners
Telford Town Park hosted the launch of the new weekly free 2K Telford junior parkrun on Sunday (19 JULY).
Following the success of the weekly Telford parkrun which happens every Saturday, this new run is aimed at junior runners, aged 4–14.
The inaugural parkrun attracted over 100 young runners, of all ages, including some as young as four year olds. Some parents of the younger runners accompanied them on the run.
The Telford junior parkrun will be held every Sunday at 10am in Telford Town Park.
The parkrun events are free to enter but those attending must register before their first run.
Councillor Liz Clare, cabinet member for Leisure Services and Culture, said: “This is a great opportunity for young people to get active and it was brilliant to see so many turn out for the first junior parkrun at the weekend.
“The parkrun every Saturday in the Town Park has proved very popular and I’m pleased that there is now a provision for younger people to take part too.
“Taking part in physical activity and sport has a proven positive impact on children’s social skills and self-esteem and the parkrun is a great opportunity for this.”
Telford & Wrekin Council’s Public Health team have contributed half of the £6,000 funding to make the junior parkrun possible.
Telford junior parkrun takes place every week on a Sunday at 10am, starting on Sunday 19 July 2015.
Anyone attending will need to bring their paper barcode, provided in the initial registration email.
